Winter Riding Tip

There are lots of excellent cycling gloves in the market place, but this winter I’ve been wearing some German Luftwaffe gloves from the army surplus store for just £5 each. I am finding them to be excellent. The quality is good and they are super warm, yet thin enough not to be clumsy when operating bicycle controls. They are available in a range of sizes and are sold individually, so you can mix’n'match and even buy a different size for each hand it that’s what you need.
Finally - if you are unlucky enough to have a tumble on the ice, then leather is unbeatable in offering abrasion resistance from the tarmac. Available in grey or black leather. Recommended for piloting an ME109 or for the daily cycle.

“Giro Feature” Urban Cycling Helmet

There are arguments for and against wearing a cycling helmet, but personally if my head hits the floor I’d rather be wearing one than not. However the issue for an urban cyclist is finding something that looks OK. Even if you’re not particularly fashion conscious, a streamlined, brightly coloured, hat perched on your cranium, only really suits if you’re wearing Lycra and cleats; when you cycle at a sedate pace with your briefcase on a rack and your trouser in your sock, it just looks odd.

Thankfully there is now a broad range of urban designs aimed at people who use their bike for transport instead of fitness. My latest purchase is the “Giro Feature”. It comes in a range of sizes which gets away from the idea of having one helmet which you have to pad out to fit your head. The result is a more close fitting design that looks the right size for your head and less like an ill-fitting saucepan. Internally there are no foam pads to delaminate, instead properly shaped quilted parts cushion your head and an easily adjustable grip band helps it stay in place.

Externally it is rounded at the back to more closely fit the contour of your head helping it look more like a cap than a helmet. The front has an adjustable peak and the whole thing weighs in at only 300g. All it all it’s a nice hat for the price – I like it. Available in a range of colours, try one on for yourself and check in the mirror.

Sidehacks at the Circus

Just before Christmas we shipped two sidehacks to the famous ‘City Circus’ of Le Mans in France. Here is a picture of them familiarising themselves in the practice hall. The circus is a community project providing facilities for performing arts and creative skills. We hope they have fun on the sidehacks and look forward to seeing them performing some acrobatics on them soon. Not recommended for tightrope riding though !

Sponsor Nick

Nick keeps himself very fit. He’s a keen runner and cyclist, and often cycles to the workshop from home, that’s 15 miles each way.

He’s currently in training to undertake a cycle ride from John O’Groats to lands end. This is some distance although the average land elevation is higher in Scotland, so I reckon it should be downhill most of the way ! A commendable effort and it’s all in aid of raising money for Cancer charities. Sorry for the plug, but please donate if you can and leave an inspiring (or mocking !) message to send Nick on his way. If he raises enough money he’s promised to do it again next year on a Rattlebone. Now that would be a challenge ! Anyone want to ride Monkey ?

Please sponsor Nick here : http://www.justgiving.com/Nick-Hides1
or donate to the Gail Force team : https://www.justgiving.com/teams/gailforceten
Thank you.

C12 Carbon Fibre and Gravity Racing

We wanted to give a shout out to C12 Composites today. We’ve been talking to Stephen Thomas who owns C12, about Carbon Fibre wheels and components. Check out their website for details of projects they’re involved in including Dymag Motorcycle wheels, Eco marathon cars, microlight parts and the Bloodhound Project.

We were particularly interested to see their gravity racer work, see this video for highlights of the Cairngorm Soapbox Extreme event. C12 went on to win overall but of course it’s the sidecar racers that were cheering for.

Integrated Bike Lock

An integrated bike lock is a terrific idea; a lock that is always with you wherever you are and on hand for those unscheduled stops. As a commuter, having one lock at work and another at home is one solution that avoids carrying a lock, but an integrated solution is so much more. We’ve seen some designs in the past, but this latest offering from Interlock looks interesting and provides a long enough cable to secure the frame and back wheel to a suitable anchor point. It is subtly hidden when folded away and should fit most bike makes and models. Another great project originating from the inspiring Kickstarter Website.

A Bicycle Camping Trailer

Hey - this is something we hadn’t thought of, a bicycle caravan. This concept design by Brooklyn-based artist Kevin Cyr has a couple of problems, namely weight and wind resistance - particularly when pulled by a three speed shopping bike ! However the notion has possibilities and it looks great. Many people tour on bicycles pulling trailers and pitching tents. What if the trailer was in fact the tent ? - that could work. It would provide improved comfort and could still be low lying and aerodynamic. One company has developed the idea into a product called the UFO Urban Freedom Outlander. It will be interesting to see if it takes off.

Hey ! Nice side car

This bicycle was developed by a partnership between Ziba Design and Signal Cycles. The mission was to develop a utility bike made for urban living and transport.

This neat design uses a small pivoting sidecar arrangement attached to the bike via a clever linkage, which also allows the sidecar to be stowed on the back rack when not in use. This pivot also makes the bicycle easy to ride, allowing the rider to lean into corners rather than having to steer it like a trike.

Particularly nice are the tailor made bags, both of which fold flat for storage. Other functional features include an integrated lock, disc brakes and dynamo powered lights. The colour scheme looks great and a belt drive with hub gears provides a low maintenance gear train.

Moulton Bicycle

I’m reading Alex Moulton’s autobiography at the moment so wanted to give a shout out to all those Moulton riders out there. The classic Moulton bicycle was designed from a fresh perspective on what a bicycle should be, a side step from the evolution that gave us the boneshaker, the ordinary and then the safety cycle. The approach was to start with small, light wheels which would enable a low, step through, frame to be used. To reduce rolling resistance, wheels used high pressure tyres and this necessitated the need for some simple suspension to give a compliant ride. Alex Moulton used his experience in designing the original Mini rubber suspension  and applied it to his bicycle design.

Modern Moultons have evolved into lattice frame structures with hub gearboxes and dynamo systems but it is the classic ‘F’ frame model shown below which we salute today, as the one that started it all.
